Tom Smith began his career as a mechanics apprentice in 1987 servicing heavy machinery and over the road trucks as well as passenger cars and light trucks. In 1991, he moved to Wyoming and began working in the oilfield as a motor man on drilling rigs and then as a plant mechanic for Exxon at the Chute Creek gas plant in La Barge, Wyoming. In 1998, Tom moved to Florida and returned to the automotive industry as a mechanic, where he accurately assessed vehicle malfunctions and performed extensive repairs on both foreign and domestic vehicles. Furthering his career and knowledge, he received his designation as an ASE Certified Master Technician in 2002. In 2013, Tom was promoted to lead automotive technician where he supervised a team of technicians and assigned their work and eventually transitioned to a specialty automotive technician working on Chevrolet vehicles, where he provided innovative solutions to the operational challenges involving vehicle repairs and maintenance. He joined the Jack Ward Fire Consultants team as an Automotive Specialist/Evidence Technician in 2025, bringing with him his 38 years of mechanical experience and knowledge of many vehicle operation systems. As an Automotive Specialist, Tom is involved in fire, accident and failure analysis working alongside other subject matter experts to properly document and examine components involved in these perils. As an Evidence Technician, Tom is responsible for the collection, documentation, packaging, transportation and storage of evidence items in the field.
